The Untold History of the United States: Book Review *****
Oliver Stone along with Peter Kuznick have done a tremendous service in enhancing our understanding of American history in their documentary and accompanying book “The Untold History of the United States.” This story begins with the buildup to World War I and travels up to and including portions of the Obama Presidency. It is a book that chronicles the foreign policy of the United States that lead to her becoming the world empire that she has become.
The book is nearly 800 pages and packed with so much information it is recommended that the book be read in concert with the DVD set that is absolutely phenomenal. You will immediately be taken by the political maneuvering behind the United States entry into World War II and the real reason why the US dropped atomic bombs on Japan.

Russia lost nearly 28 million citizens as a result of the war and because of politics have been generally ignored in US accounts of the war history.
The United States lost a little more than 400,00 during World War II. However the principal focus of the US administration as the war was winding down and Germany, Japan and Italy were heading toward surrender; would be how to demonize and isolate Russia, so that America could become the worlds leading power in the post war period.
It was clear and the documentary does an excellent job of highlighting this, is that Japan was already defeated and was seeking terms of surrender. They were in the process of reaching out to Russia to negotiate the terms of the surrender. However while these negotiations were going on the United States who were aware of this decided to drop atomic bombs on both Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They didn’t drop the bombs because there was a military necessity but because they wanted to send a message to Russia; the ally who just did 80 to 90% of the fighting against Hitler.
