Black Prophetic Fire: Book Review *****

Black Prophetic Fire2

It is safe to say that Dr. Cornell West is a brilliant man.  There are learned men, men acquainted with facts, men with high degrees of education, but brilliance and genius represent  higher order cognitive skills.  Dr. West is not only  the leading public intellectual recognizable in popular culture, he may in fact be the one with the most courage as well.

His willingness to put his money where his mouth is as demonstrated by offering his body for arrest during the protest in Ferguson, Missouri is one example.  Another example is the courage he has shown in his principled and pointed  criticism of the Obama Presidency even though that is a highly unpopular potion for a black person to take considering the emotional loyalty of the black community to the President.

This brings us to his latest book “Black Prophetic Fire” which is less a written prose with chapter after chapter building toward a conclusion as much as it is a capturing  in-depth analytical conversations with Christa Buschendorf.

The premiss of the work is that it has been the African-American tradition to speak unadulterated, undiluted truth to the power in the United States through words and actions; and he laments that much of this tradition has been lost due to career driven individuals and politicians who have emerged as today’s leadership.

The book gives very incisive and nuanced analysis of  6 historical figures some familiar and some less so.  He covers strengths, weaknesses and context for the following individuals: Frederick Douglass; W.E.B. DuBois, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and the less known Ella Baker and Ida B. Wells Barnett.

The book assumes a basic knowledge of all of these figures in order to follow the nuanced discussions and deep analysis of their motivations, and the fire that burned inside each of them to complete them to such selfless acts of courage in dedication themselves to fighting the powers that be!
