#Black Lives Matter: Politics Make Strange Bedfellows

The old cliché that out of tragedy can come something positive is on grand display in the wake of non-indictments in both the Michael Brown and Eric Garner cases respectively.  The mass, multi ethnic, multi racial and ideologically diverse protest being mounted all across the nation as a result are very encouraging to those who seek a more just and equitable society.

Many pundits in the media some well-intentioned and others not so much are echoing the chorus of pestis about the sustainability of these protest almost concluding if not wishing for them to be just one more episodic outburst of black disenchantment with systemic racism supported by  fleeting white guilt that can be eroded through doubling down on racist stereotypes by the corporate owned media.

I think this analysis especially from the well-intentioned is missing the point in what is really going on here. I also  think that  for those nefarious voices hoping to quell the protest are seriously miscalculating what is really going on. You have a convergence of issues that have found audience and coalescence with black outrage over state sponsored repression being carried out by many of this nations police departments.

You have a convergence of interest around a fundamental belief in societal inequality that was first put forward in a serious way through the Occupy Wall Street Movement.  additionally you see where labor activist as well have made a connection.  However I think most compelling yet the most under-reported in the major corporate owned media is the linkage being made by those who are strong proponents of the 2nd amendment.

Occupy Wall Street

Traditionally 2nd amendments proponents have been cast as members of the National Rifle Association (NRA) who are very conservative, white, and would be expected to be on totally opposite sides of any protests spearheaded by blacks or what those perceived to be leftist.  While there are reactionary strands and even racist elements who are strong 2nd amendment advocates; that by no means represents in totality those who share these sentiments.

There are literally thousands of armed groups and 10’s of thousands of individuals who hold the 2nd amendment dear to their heart who are totally distrustful of the government; and feel that the only thing that stands between America becoming a complete and open fascist police state is them and their guns.

A recent example of this would be the incident on the Ranch of Cliven Bundy where in he has expressed his racist views about blacks being better off as slaves recited a lot of media attention; however to the astonishment of many the fact that  his supporters trained their neocons on the police when they came to evict him from his ranch causing the police to back down and retreat  received very little coverage.   Last I checked he is still on the ranch and not in jail.

What I think the naysayers are missing is that when the police in Ferguson come out with a display of military might and weaponry; it only reinforces what the Bundy’s and the many who consider themselves to be true American Patriots are feeling; that the country is moving towards a police state.

Blacks have always been the Canaries in the mines of nefarious and unjust US domestic policies such as police brutality; mass incarceration and sub prime mortgage lending represents  the latest  examples of this trend.

However blacks rising up in righteous indignation and protest against Americas hypocrisy towards her has always served as the catalyst to fuel other movements in this country from public schooling, women suffrage to immigrant rites.  Who could have imagined that police brutality against blacks would spearhead the movement against domestic militarism creating a coalition of “interest” between so many divergent groups.

Lastly to the pundits on television asking the question when will the protest stop? They are asking the wrong question. The question to ask is when will the police stop shooting down unarmed blacks and not getting indicted. I think an answer to the latter will greatly inform an answer to the former.
