#Black Lives Matter: Meritorious Manumission and the Anatomy of a Sell Out
The sleeping giant has re-awakened in black America and it is very inspiring to see. From the time the nation’s founding fathers went to war with Britain to maintain slavery in the colonies (not because of taxation without representation as commonly thought); the ruling class/government of the United States has preoccupied itself with controlling the black population. (See The Counter Revolution of 1776: Slave Resistance and the Origins of the United States of America by Gerald Horne)
The labor of black slaves created the economic foundation and backbone of the American colonies. Without the labor; creativity and ingenuity of the slaves there would not be an economic system called Capitalism nor would there have been an Industrial Revolution in America. In order to keep blacks in place to do the work necessary to generate the wealth to build the system of Capitalism that would lead to industrialization, the highest priority of the state (both North and South) was to ensure that blacks knew their place and did the work required. (See The Half Has Never Been Told: Slavery and the Making of American Capitalism by Edward E. Baptist)
Even after the civil war was fought and resolved; it was of the utmost importance to the economic system of America for blacks to return to the plantations and continue to do the work they were doing before the war. It was essential that blacks returned to work for the southern plantations that supplied the northern factories where the raw materials were refined and manufactured that served to make America an international economic power.
However since slavery was outlawed after the emancipation proclamation and the civil war; new more devious methods of forcing blacks to do the work as “free people” that they did as slaves were enacted. Such methods were sharecropping, chain gangs, convict leasing and outright terrorist activity to discourage independent thinking and high ambition. (See Slavery By Another Name: The Re-Enslavement of Black Americans from the Civil War to World War II by Douglass Blackmon).
Black have always resisted and fought back on every level to advance themselves from the time they were first captured and marched to the slaves ships off the coast of Africa all the way to being enslaved in America. Sometimes the resistance was armed as in the largest and most successful slave revolt in America in 1811 in New Orleans (See American Uprising: The Untold Story of America’s Largest Slave Revolt, by Daniel Rasmussen).
However one of the most critical weapons that the slave holders had at their disposal was their ability to reward slaves who turned in or on other slaves; especially if those slaves were planning a rebellion. In the book Black Labor White Wealth by Dr. Claude Anderson he writes:
“Government and dominant white society have historically rewarded blacks who identified with the larger white community and placed their welfare above that of the black community. For selling out their own community, blacks were often rewarded with special positions, money, or meritorious manumission.”
The Meritorious Manumission Act was enacted in 1710 in Virginia but would go on to become one of the primary tools of control over the black population throughout America even up to the present. The act provided for the freeing of a slave for performing any one out of these four deeds:
- Saving the life of his master
- Saving the property of his master

Up until recently believe it or not this “Act” was still a very effective tactic of social control of the black population in the US; especially those living in poor neighborhoods. While the society has changed dramatically since 1710; there is still a social, political and most importantly economic imbalance that has its root in the 1700’s that has not been effectively dealt with to this day. When blacks raise this issue whether in the context of reparations, or ending police brutality they are in a very direct way disturbing the status quo potentially impacting the “masters property.”
With the spirit of the Black Lives Matter Movement being so strong and determined; and with the empathy and support of so many both domestically and internationally; the master class of today are feeling a little discomfort. They are feeling that their property (profits) are at risk that there could be a rebellion (boycott, mass voting, mass bank account withdrawals), or that the NFL and NBA could all refuse to play unless demands for justice are heard. Pretty scary stuff for the master class to entertain on the domestic front while in the midst of a an economic war with Russia and China.
