Doing Business by the Good Book: Americas Largest Black Owned Business

If a poll were taken among the American people, blacks in particular to name the largest (in terms of revenue) black owned business in the United States you would get answers such as: Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Studios; Magic Johnson Enterprises; Tyler Perry’s Studios, or maybe even Jay Z’s business empire (Roc Nation, Rocawear, Rocafella, etc).

If you answered with one of the individuals above you would have answered wrong. In fact I would argue that unless you are a regular and avid reader of Black Enterprise Magazine you would be clueless and would probably flail around with names such as Bob Johnson (BET – which is no longer black owned by the way), Michael Jordan’s (Air Jordan) or something or someone connected to sports or entertainment taking you even further away from the correct locale and answer.

Hopefully you haven’t let your eyes wander down this post for the answer and are following along with me as a build the suspense leading up to the disclosure. I want to reiterate that the largest black owned business has nothing to do with sports, music or entertainment but in fact is an Information Technology Company.   I will repeat this: the largest black owned business in the United States is an Information Technology Company.

Is it any wonder that when the Los Angeles Clippers were being forcibly sold out from under Donald Sterling that attracted the attention of Magic Johnson, Oprah Winfrey, Floyd Mayweather and a consortium of entertainers that Steve Ballmer the former chairman of Microsoft – essentially shut the whole thing down by bidding 2 billion dollars. The discussion was over; the 2 billion was far beyond what any of the others could cobble together in such a short time.

Why this is instructive is that 4 of the last NBA franchises that were purchased were purchased by business men who come from the world of Information Technology. The largest black owned company in the United States is an Information Technology company.

World Wide Technology or better known as WWT to the Fortune 500 companies that they service is owned by David L. Steward. This is a name that is not known to most especially black’s however he is an African-American and a Christian.

The reason I stress his faith is because he wrote a book titled ‘Doing Business by the Good Book’ that outlines how he built World Wide Technologies by following 52 lessons straight from the Bible. The purpose of this article is to stress 2 very important points and really expand the thinking about what is possible for Christians; especially those that attend large mega churches, and for black youth who believe that sports and entertainment are the only ways to build a business empire.

I would high recommend that anyone interested in improving their business; career, or life in general to go get a copy of ‘Doing Business By The Good Book: 52 Lessons on Success Straight from the Bible.”
